What is Mental Health First Aid?

Similar to physical first aid and CPR, Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) teaches you how to recognize when someone is experiencing a mental health or substance abuse crisis and provide support during non-crisis situations.
Our healthcare advocates are certified MHFA trainers and offer free training for community members.
Why Should I Train in MHFA? How Does It Help My Community?
People struggling with mental health challenges often do so alone, in silence. It can affect their relationships and their performance at work and school. This also increases the risk of other diseases. Help is available but many people do not seek it.
Those who are trained in MHFA are able to recognize signs and symptoms and help people get the support they need.
When you are trained in MHFA you learn
- Common signs and symptoms of mental health and substance abuse challenges
- A five-step action plan to help people get the care they need in their community
- How to interact with a person in crisis
- In-depth content about trauma, substance abuse and self-care
Who are our trainers?
Our advocates work on healthcare issues in the community year-round and have been certified to teach MHFA by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing.
We can offer a training at your church, school, community center, or other organization.
Our trainers have also been certified to provide MHFA for youth. They offer training in both English and Spanish.
