State Sen. Leroy Comrie partners with Healthcare Education Project, York College, and Jamaica Hospital Medical Center for the ninth annual Women’s Health Symposium at York College in Jamaica, Saturday, March 29, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
At the symposium, alopecia, or hair loss, and preventive care, along with maternal, mental and women’s health will be discussed. Also, York’s Student Activities Department, will have nursing students from the school providing free blood pressure and blood sugar level screenings under the supervision of York Associate Director of the Counseling Center Sybil Nurse-Reeves.
“Women’s health is community health. The 9th Annual Women’s Health Symposium brings together experts, advocates, and local organizations to ensure women in Southeast Queens have the knowledge and resources they need to live healthier lives. This event is about empowerment, because when women are healthy, families and communities thrive,” said State Sen. Comrie.
“We as women, as Black women, need to take more time to ourselves. We take care of our families, our kids and things at work. We get the job done. This is the day for us to be a little selfish. The symposium is run by women, for women. It’s time for us to take some time off and decompress from all of the everyday commitments that we have to learn about the nuisances in healthcare preventive measures and to improve our health. Our health is our wealth. Without good healthcare we are not good to anyone,” said Marcelle Dinall, Healthcare Education Project Advocate, South East Queens.
