Joint Statement from Yvonne Armstrong and Kenneth E. Raske on New York’s Healthcare Budget

May 28, 2026

New Yorkers count on strong hospitals, skilled healthcare workers, and a healthcare system that puts patients first. With the passage of this year’s state budget, New York’s leaders made clear that protecting healthcare remains a top priority.

We thank Governor Kathy Hochul, Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, and members of the New York State Legislature for committing over $2 billion to stabilize New York’s healthcare system from President Trump’s cuts and supporting hospitals, workers, and communities across our state. Their leadership avoids devastating loss of access to high quality care for patients and families across New York, while supporting the frontline healthcare workers and hospitals they rely on every day.

This budget takes action to stabilize healthcare, but the fight is far from over. Far too many New Yorkers are facing unaffordable spikes in the cost of insurance because of federal cuts. In the years ahead, as these massive federal cuts are implemented, leaders in Albany must remain vigilant and united to defend the progress New York has made to ensure that every New Yorker has access to affordable, quality care.

For more than 25 years, 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East and Greater New York Hospital Association have worked together through the Healthcare Education Project to protect and strengthen healthcare in New York. That work continues today, because healthcare is a moral necessity and a lifeline for millions of New Yorkers.
